“In director Michael Winterbottom and screenwriter John Curran's adaptation of Jim Thompson's gamy
pulp novel 'The Killer Inside Me,' Casey Affleck plays a small-town Texas lawman whose polite exterior
masks a raging misanthropy. Affleck's terrific -- reserved, handsome and creepy -- but Winterbottom
doesn't have enough of an individual style to make the movie any more than a serviceable noir homage.
(Also, the graphic violence is ugly and gratuitous.) The DVD and Blu-ray add only a trio of featurettes."

“What makes ‘Killer’ so fascinating is watching Lou juggle several aspects of his personality without ever losing his cool. He fends off the accusations of a Columbo-esque FBI agent (Simon Baker) and his clingy galpal (Kate Hudson, sexy and vulnerable like we’ve never seen her before). His sense of calm is more chilling than his flashes of rage.”

“THE KILLER INSIDE ME: First filmed in the mid-1970s, novelist Jim Thompson's melodrama about a deputy sheriff who's secretly a serial killer may seem less unique in the age of ``Dexter,'' but it remains a potent vehicle for its main star ... in this case, Casey Affleck. As others begin to suspect who's responsible for the wave of murders, the lawman's behavioral camouflage starts to evaporate; Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, Ned Beatty, Simon Baker and Bill Pullman also are in director Michael Winterbottom's cast. *** (R: AS, N, P, GV) (Also on Blu-ray)”

“'Me' is an extremely enjoyable (and, in spite of the noir pretense, unabashedly and darkly humorous) picture of complete character degeneration, and the only thing more satisfying than the journey is the wild turn of events the movie assembles for its conclusion."

"'THE KILLER INSIDE ME' Rating 2 1/2 out of 4
(2010, MPI; 109 minutes) Casey Affleck is effective as a mild-mannered, well-behaved psychopath, who
seems utterly disconnected from the vicious crimes he commits. His female victims also seem oddly
detached from their pain, and their taste for pain. Adapted from a pulp crime thriller by Jim Thompson,
the film is well-directed by Michael Winterbottom but lacks closure because its central character is so
completely disconnected from his actions. Rated R. (Roger Ebert)"

“The violence is shocking to watch, but the rest of this handsome-looking film gleams like a diamond in the hot Texas sun. A disturbing and provocative watch.”

"Jim Thompson's violent pulp novel about a seemingly affable lawman (Casey Affleck) who happens to be a sociopath gets a brutally effective (and just plain brutal) big-screen edition from Michael Winterbottom, who directs with a chilling calm. He doesn't flinch from the violence, which sparked debates over the ethics of presenting violence onscreen. The scenes of brutality against women (Kate Hudson and Jessica Alba) are neither exploitative nor titillating, but they are so visceral and unpleasant that some audiences will want to steer clear. The DVD and Blu-ray both include three featurettes"

"...the film’s got plenty of juice otherwise, beyond the unholy spectacle of Alba and a relatively zaftig Hudson’s vampy degradations — the period flavor is tangy, the acting (especially Affleck, who may be a little too aw-shucks-looking for his own good) is mint, and Winterbottom’s gimlet eye is still powerful."

Micheal Giltz writes: "Affleck has a gift for playing unpleasant, awkward characters and that's used to full effect here in scenes that are uncomfortably violent in a disturbing, unflinching manner that divided critics and audiences but made it one of the most talked about indie films of the year. It's the latest curve ball from the ever-restless director Michael Winterbottom. Clearly not for the delicate, it's noir without the romanticism.
